How to Determine the Value of a Football Card

January 28th 2008

Are you an ardent football fan and do you collect football cards? Well, if the answer is yes then you will be happy to know that you might be sitting on a potential goldmine. Like all ardent fans, you must have also started collecting and trading cards as a child. However, today, this hobby has changed into a million dollar industry where you have major companies selling different kinds of football cards. Today, for some, collecting cards has become an investment challenge where you can buy and sell for a fortune. The rarer the football card collection you have, the higher price it can fetch at a sports card auction.

The main question, however, is how do you determine the value a card? Well, the first thing that determines the value of a card is its condition. Cards in impeccable mint condition fetch more than those which have some defects. You can assess the condition of a football card by visiting a nearby shop dealing in sports cards. Note minor details, such as slight corner bends do bring down the value of an apparently mint condition football card.

The next determining factor for the value of a football card is the year of the card and the player depicted on the card. Old vintage cards have a greater value than most cards. However, the players career stats will play an important role in establishing the value of the card. If he had any success as a football player, then you have a potential gold mine with you. Also, if you possess a card that is not easily available, then it is valued higher, given its scarcity in the market.

The Internet can be a great tool and medium to determine the value of your football card. With a few single clicks, it is possible to determine the value of your card. At footballcardchase.com, you can locate your football card by player or year, then see what the card is priced at across multiple sports card dealer websites. It is a great handy tool for football card collectors.

Lastly, Internet auction sites and the pricing guides will help you determine the value of your card. They will give you adequate information about the desirability of the card and the emotional attachment that people have towards that particular card. This will ultimately help determine the value of your card.

January 21st 2008

Sports enthusiasts, like you and me, have always wanted to be closer to our players. We have found that in collecting player cards for our favorite football players. If you are, like me, an ardent fan of the game of football, then you must have spent hours looking up player statistics and their records. The best way to keep in touch with your players is by collecting football cards. This is a hobby that is not only very old but also very special to the people who collect. In fact, as I am fond of saying, card collectors are a community by themselves as only one collector will understand another and for football card collectors this is very true.

Football card collecting started as a small hobby in the beginning with enthusiasts buying tobacco products and gum for the free cards. It has now boomed into a big industry, where there are bigger stakeholders and even bigger stakes. What started as idle exchange of cards between students and children has now become a big trading business. In fact, people often start collecting football cards as an investment raking in major money by way of profits of sale. However, this is only for those who look at it as an investment oriented hobby.

The main reason for collecting cards, however, is being close to the players and the game. What better way to show that you are an ardent fan of football then by having your favorite football players cards. An autographed football card or a special edition card leaves us feeling close to the game. Keeping track of the game, its players, their performances, the rookies, everything has become very easy with the card collecting hobby associated with football.

Finally, this hobby is an all the time hobby, resulting in enthusiasts buying cards all year round. It is one of the affordable hobbies a person can have, unless of course you are in it for investment purposes and choose to buy expensive cards. For those who are looking for investment purposes, football card collecting can be a great way to earn money and learn the game of trading cards. Last, but not least, it’s a social activity that helps card collectors meet, celebrate and enjoy football.

The first step towards collecting football cards is to buy a price guide. Although prices are usually inflacted, that will tell you what cards are out there and the general range of prices. Price of a card is determined by aspects like desirability of player, condition of the card, its availability or scarcity, and its grade or condition.

History of Football Card Collecting and Types of Football Cards

December 28th 2007

Football Card Collecting, as you are aware, is an age old hobby that has kept many game lovers totally connected with all aspects of the sport and with their favorite players. As a sport, Football is perhaps the most loved in the U.S. In fact, the Super Bowl is something akin to an undeclared holiday for many of us.

Popularity of any game is always marked by its players and their records and there is no better way to keep in touch with the players then by collecting football cards. History has it that sports cards were first introduced by tobacco companies who used player cards as their hook to increase sales of their products! Later on, of course, tobacco products were replaced by gum and it was only past the Second World War that companies were set up that actually sold football cards as collectibles.

The first company to actually sell player cards was Bowman, way back in 1948. Topps was the second company to be established in 1951 and they took over Bowman and became the sole ruler of the player cards market till very recently. Companies like Upper Deck, Donruss and Fleer, entered the market much later, some time after the early 1980s. Ever since, there has been a big boom in the business of player cards and football cards, with each company vying with the other to create the cards an avid football card collector should have in their card collection.

If you are new to the football card collecting hobby, then it often becomes a daunting task to decide what to collect and how. Well, there are basically four categories of cards that you can collect, namely, rookie cards, singles, complete sets and unopened sets. A Rookie is the 1st card produced for a player per brand. Each card company or card brand will have their own rookie cards for each player. Today a player can have upwards of 100 Rookie cards! But that was not always the case. Unopened sets is visual treat for football card art collectors. Each football card has an allure of its own that is unmatchable. Singles are just that, single cards. You can use FootballCardChase.com to find singles of football players.
